HISTORY OF CALIKID NORTE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

SITUATIONAL OVERVIEW

Historical Background

In the year 1926, the ancestors of Julian Villar and Gayla came to the vast forest surrounded by creek. They called the place “Nacalidkidan” because the place was surrounded by trees and grasses called “lidda”, and “Calidliddaan” means full of grasses. Finally, they called the place Calikid.

The old people who were the first inhabitants of the place are the ancestors of Villar, who became the leader of the place. They were followed by the ancestors of Riñon, Umipig, Ubaldo, Ragamat, Quitan, Tabarra, Aquino, Mariano, Viernes, Flores, Garganta, Dela Cruz, Gabriel, Domingo, Eugenio, Punzal, and del Rosario.

Soon thereafter, the place became a small barrio as they organized amongst themselves and hailed Julian Villar as the “TenyentedelBaryo”

CHAPTER II

BEFORE THE WORLD WAR II

In the year 1930, Juan Gayla succeeded Julian Villar as the “TenyentedelBaryo”. An election followed and Proceso Villar won. In 1936, General Tinio purchased two parcels of land of the homesteaders of Calikid Norte and donated them to the Philippine Army. One served as a Training Camp and the other one was used as an airstrip of the USAFFE.

In 1939, all the men were enlisted by the government into the Home Defense Civilian Guard; a unit of men to safeguard the welfare of the people against the enemies and invaders.

CHAPTER III

JAPANESE INVASION

In 1940, the Japanese entered the Philippines and conquered our country. They spread all over the Philippines. During that time, Calikid Norte was just adjacent to the Training Camp. The Japanese were able to capture the army camp and Calikid Norte was included in their occupancy.

On December 8, 1940; the Japanese bombed the training camp. The people were fearful and scattered to the mountains and everywhere. They stayed there and were safe up to 1941. The people who remained became slaves of the Japanese and could do nothing except to follow what the Japanese ordered.

The Japanese expanded their reservation camps and Calikid was included. The people affected were given only 10 days to evacuate their properties. The residents who were forced to leave their homes organized themselves to buy a parcel of land which became the dwelling place of the people of Calikid.

The new homestead was so big and wide that the homesteaders divided it into three parcels and each parcel had its own TenyentedelBaryo. Calikid Este was led by Valeriano Bugawan, Calikid Weste was led by Mariano Aimodoval and Calikid Norte was led by Isamel Abad.

After setting the Este, Weste and Norte boundaries, Calikid Norte was chosen to be the center of the Baranggay Association headed by Simeon Samin and Proceso Villar. After organizing the Baranggay Association, the adjacent barrios such as Macatbong, Patalac, Bangad, and Bakod Bayan were also invited to join the association.

CHAPTER IV

POST WORLD WAR REGIME

The end of World War II saw the rise and progress of the country. This was widespread and far-reaching. Growth in educational and other institutions, economic development and world brotherhood was brought about by the changes.

In 1945, after the end of World War II; peace did not last long. The HUKBALAHAP which helped rebel against the Japanese continues to disturb the peaceful living of the people. HUKBALAHAP brought insurgency and people were forced to give money, clothes, and food.

After HUKBALHAP was suppressed in 1946, the Armed Forces of the Philippines followed with the same treatment of the people for almost five years. In 1950, came the total peace. Ramon Magsaysay was the president of the Philippines. Thereafter came Carlos P. Garcia, Diosdado Macapagal, and Ferdinand E. Marcos.

CHAPTER V

THE BAGONG LIPUNAN

President Marcos, in his desire to mold a new society, ordered President Decree No. 13 which is the creation of Bagong Lipunan.

One of the aims of Bagong Lipunan is to educate the people to have self-discipline and orderliness; and that all the people should join in implementing changes.

One of those is to have clean and beautiful surroundings. All of the people joined in cleaning the surroundings, homes, schools, colleges, hotels, amusement houses, markets, and all government offices. All people were encouraged to have clean and green surroundings. In the end, proper garbage disposal was encouraged and mandated.

Even in Calikid Norte – although this was a poor and rain-fed barrio, all the people tried their best to make the Bagong Lipunan a success. Under the leadership of Maximo Villar and the co-operation of the whole community, the place became a very peaceful barrio to live in the peace and order was maintained by the Barangay Tanod especially during night-time.

Many changes took place. The Samahang Kabataan was transformed to Kabataang Barangay which composed of youths aging 15-18. The youths were given duties and responsibilities to help in making progress to the barangay. The old Samahang Kababaihan (Women’s Welfare Organization) was changed to Brigadang Kababaihan Barangay. The rural police are now the Barangay TAnod which maintains peace and order of the place. During the Bagong Lipunan, people were trained for disaster preparedness such as fire preparedness, earthquake and typhoon. There were leaders to provide information, preparedness training, and numerous monitoring teams to help work with the government.

In 1975, Samahang Nayon was organized and established. This had 130 members with the aim to inform farmers of modern techniques of planting, and to help farmers in uplifting their livelihoods. It also aimed to help farmers to obtain loans from the banks.

The green revolution was activated. Because of land reformation, almost 70 farmers were given land ownership and titled certificates.

In 1977, Non-Formal Education was introduced to the community and all interested participants were able to enroll in dressmaking, tailoring, machine embroidery, and cooking. Non-formal education recipients were successfully employed in factories and many also made their businesses in sewing.

CHAPTER VI

CUSTOMS AND BELIEFS IN THE BARANGAY

This chapter outlines the continual events during the old and new generations; passing from the past to the present ages. These customs and traditions are still observed in the barangay today.

One of the customs and traditions in marriage is the marital consent between parents of the contradicting parties. There is the so-called pamanhikan.

Early marriage still prevails in the place so that the parents may be free from sustaining their children.

“Sabit-Sabit” is the pinning of money to the newly-wed couples after the marriage ceremony. This is so that a newly married couple will have a financial foundation for their new setting as husband and wife.

Beliefs and Religion

Many religions and beliefs are existing in this barangay; such as Roman Catholic, Iglesia Ni Cristo, Baptist, Methodist, AIMPIL, Holy Pentecost, Jesus is Lord, Born Again Christians and “Rizalismo”.

“Damayan” is still widely practiced in this place in a spirit of cooperation and unity.

The residents of Calikid Norte believe that education is a very important and integral part of the lives of the people. For that reason, Mababang Paaralan ng Calikid Norte was established as the start of elementary education for its children. It started operations in 1946 in a makeshift house made of bamboo and cogon with 10 pupils.

Amongst the foundation pupils were Eutiquio R. Javier, Epifanio Villar, Yolanda Carpio, Eufemia Dela Cruz, Benigno Quitan and Abad Villar. Some of the earliest teachers were Mr. Pastor C. Torres, Mr. Encarnacion Reyes, Ms. Valecanta, Mr. Sarmienta and many more.

As the years passed; and as migration and immigration took place due to the continual arrival of members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines because of the nearby camp; the population of the school continually increased.

From then up to the present, the school became progressive and refurbished. More and more buildings were erected, concreted and modernized. Computers and televisions are now being used by the teachers.

Presently, the enrolment of the school has risen to about 429 pupils and employs 15 teachers, 1 principal, and 3 utility work.
